CSA Canadian Electrical Code 2024 Cycle

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) supports regulatory adoption of the Canadian Electrical Code (CE). The CE Code is developed through an accredited consensus process, in which Regulatory Authority Committee members are eligible to vote against a proposed change.

Currently, the CSA is accepting proposals to the 2024 CE Code changes.

The CSA Process:

The CE Code is developed over a three-year cycle in accordance with the CSA Group’s accredited consensus process. A balanced Committee is ultimately responsible for approving revisions (Committee on the CE Code, Part I), as outlined in Appendix C of the CE Code.

All properly formatted proposals are reviewed by Subcommittees, after which the proposals are posted for a 60-day public review. Public review comments are considered by the Subcommittee and recommendations are forwarded to the Committee for ballot. This includes recommendations to reject the proposal.

How to Participate & Submit a Proposal:

Who can participate? Any member of the public, Committee member, representative, and any company or regulatory authority can submit a proposal.

Members of the public who wish to suggest a code revision, deletion, or propose a new rule can submit their proposal through Appendix C, annex B of the Canadian Electrical Code Part I.

When can you participate? Proposals can be submitted at any time during this process.

• After the public review period and Subcommittee recommendation has been completed, the proposal moves up to the Committee for voting
• After each Committee meeting, a “memorandum of revisions” (MOR) is created to illustrate the approved changes to date in the current code cycle. As there are four meetings over each cycle, there are generally four MORs issued, typically within 90 days following each meeting

How can you participate? You can submit a proposal by using the online proposal form via the CSA Code Portal. Follow steps to complete registration. Information required in the proposal includes contact information, reason for request, proposed revision and rationale, and if applicable, relevant impact assessments.

TIP: When submitting a proposal, it's important to substantiate your request through the five criteria listed on the form. This will improve your chance of the technical Subcommittee finding the request persuasive enough to proceed with.

• The CE Code portal also offers free access to Appendix C Rules of procedure, regulatory contact information, proposal forms, formal interpretations, and more
