In 2020, COVID-19 challenged our organization to rethink our approach to assessments. We created a workable remote assessment solution which allowed us to provide safety oversight to the province over a difficult year. For us and our clients, this was a drastic shift within a short period of time, and we also acknowledge that it has created some pain points for clients.

We believe that remote assessments are a viable tool in providing safety oversight in a post-COVID-19 world, and we’d like to build a better assessment experience for you, with your help. We’d like to hear more about what you would envision as the ideal way to perform remote assessments, what your biggest pain points are with the current way, and what kinds of digital tools you’re used to using on the job.

As part of our business plan in 2021, we’re looking into how we can continue to improve remote assessments, and how to best communicate the guidelines around them. Some of this work was completed recently, which includes client portal improvements that make communication between duty holders and safety officers much more intuitive and efficient.

In alignment with the recently announced BC Restart plan, we will continue to expand our in-person assessment capability as the province opens up. Remote assessments will continue to be used where it makes sense to do so, and is part of our work as described in our business plan.

For remote assessments, our safety officers review photos and documentation and may need to follow up with clients for additional clarifications. With that said, we will be reviewing the overall assessment program to better determine the model for fees.

We will be doing impact analysis before adopting newer National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) code editions and requirements around historical boilers, so the answer to your question is yet to be determined.

Not all assessments can be performed remotely—some may need a physical inspection. Right now, we are continuing to work on identifying where remote assessments are best utilized.

Currently we offer online courses on Act, Regulations and Directives for several technologies. We're working on expanding this offering to other technologies as well. For any enquiries, training needs, and suggestions for new courses, clients can email learning@technicalsafetybc.ca. We also work with the Province to streamline and harmonize legislation where it makes sense or is appropriate to do so.
